As the name of this portion of the site suggests, this is an Index of Famous Dogs throughout history, both in reality and in fiction. This is not to be considered a complete list, nor can i account for the accuracy of all the information here. I have lots of improvements planned; if you'd like details please click "newsletter" in the menu above.

Below you will find additional information on the following topics:

ACCURACY RATINGS

You may have noticed that many of the names in the Index have a © or a ® next to them. I use these marks as a way of communicating how sure i am that the data i have presented about any given dog is accurate. The reason for this is that i want to maintain a sense of informational integrity while still being able to post reader submissions, but without having to personally research each submission before posting it (even if i did that full time, i would never finish!).

The accuracy ratings are based primarily on my personal ability to vouch for information. For example, if i have seen the T.V. show (or movie, or whatever) in which some dog appeared, and i am certain from listening to the dialogue and/or reading the credits that i have the name and its related data correct, that dog will get a © next to its name. On the other hand, if i have not personally witnessed the existence of a dog, but its name was obtained from a reliable source (such as a book or a trusted contributor), that dog will probably get a ® next to it name. Of course, even a name with a © or a ® is subject to typos and other errors!

© It's Confirmed! accurate:
Rating: 100%
I can personally vouch for the accuracy of this information.
I am 100% sure it's correct.

¨ I'm Reasonably Sure it's accurate:
Rating:  98%
Information of which i personally have no proof, but for which sufficient evidence has been presented that i am convinced it's accurate. I am 98% sure it's correct.

(no rating given) I cannot vouch for the accuracy of this information.

NOTE: just because an entry is given no accuracy rating DOES NOT mean that it is necessarily untrue or unreliable! It only means that i PERSONALLY cannot vouch for its accuracy.

SOURCES and SOURCE TYPES

The Source field of the Index of Famous Dogs is where i list what each dog is famous for; if it appeared in a book, the Source field will contain the title of the book (and the author, if known); if it was in a movie, you'll find the title of the movie, etc..

The Source Type field is there to provide more info about the "Source," so you will know if the title you see listed in the Source field is a book, movie, T.V. show, etc..

Here is a list of all the "Source Types" used in the Index of Famous dogs:

CONTRIBUTOR CREDITS

Of course, i could not have amassed all the information found in the Index of Famous Dogs all by myself; i have had many contributors send me helpful info over the years -- so many, in fact, that i had to start color-coding their initials! Any data that i didn't come up with on my own is marked in the "WHO" column (on the far right); if it was a person, you will find their initials there. If it was a web site or other publication, you will find a number in the "WHO" field. If the "WHO" field is empty, that means i came up with that name myself.

If you would like to make a submission to the Index of Famous Dogs, please visit the Frequently Asked Questions page for more information.
