Thanks for your interest in the Index of Famous Dogs! Please read through the menu of Frequently Asked Questions (below) to see if one of them might provide the answer you're looking for. I receive such a high volume of email that i sometimes never get around to replying at all, so i try to answer the most common questions here to avoid leaving people hanging.

Some of the answers here may sound harsh, and i apologize for that. Unfortunately for the 99% of you who are nice, the 1% who are not nice tend to send more email. I have gotten a lot of grief over the years (my reward, apparently, for providing all this fun information at no cost and without advertisements), and you will unfortunately find that reflected from time to time in this F.A.Q.. Just note that if you are a nice person, the bitterness you detect is not directed at you :)

Q: How do I find a dog by the show it was on, or by its breed?

A: Currently i do not have a means to search the entire site (if you would like to be notified when this feature is implemented, please consider signing up for our newsletter). In the meantime, you'll have to do it the old-fashioned way: manually.

  1. Use your browser's "find" function. Every browser i've ever used has had a "Find" function; in both Netscape & Internet Explorer it's located in the "Edit" menu; on a PC, you can also press "Ctrl-F" to bring up the search window, on a Mac you can press "Command-F". America Online & Web TV users will have to look through their respective Help files to find out how to search for text on a page if they don't know how.
  2. Visit each dog page, and try to "find" the breed or the name of the show on each one. For example, if you were looking for the name of the dog on Petticoat Junction, you would visit each of the main dog lists (A-D, E-L, M-R, and S-Z) performing a "Find" for the word "Petticoat" or the phrase "Petticoat Junction" on each page until you got your answer. Similarly, if you were looking for Labrador retrievers, you could search each page for "Labrador" or "Lab."
  3. Tip: Skip pages which probably will not include the dog you're looking for. If you are looking for the name of a dog that was on a T.V. Show, you do not need to look on the "Famous People's Dogs" page. If you're looking for a specific breed of domestic dog, you don't need to look on the "Wild Dogs" page.
  4. If you still can't find the dog you're looking for, submit it! It's almost certain that if a dog isn't on my list, I don't know it, so just emailing and asking me for the answer won't do either of us any good. Using the submission form will make things go a lot more smoothly for both of us!

Q: What was the breed of the dog in the movie Turner and Hooch / As Good as it Gets?

A: These dogs' breeds are listed in their entries, and yet at least one person emails me every week about one or the other asking me for the answer anyway.

Hooch © Turner & Hooch Movie Tom Hanks' slobbery Dogue de Bordeaux partner SGM
Verdell © As Good as it Gets, 1997 Movie Jack Nicholson's costar; played by Jill the Brussels griffon

Hooch was a Dogue de Bordeaux. Verdell, played by Jill, was a Brussels griffon. In general, if you see some words in an entry that don't look familiar to you, you might want to consider that those words might be a breed that you've never heard of. If the breed is not listed at all, that means I don't know! My submissions form has a section for "information requests;" if you really would like to know the breed of an dog, i will add to its entry a request for its breed. However i can't guarantee that you'll ever get an answer, since we'll just be relying on somebody to come across the request and submit the answer.

Q: What was the name of the cartoon dog that would "hug itself & float into the air" when given a doggie treat?

A: This question is probably answered most eloquently by the person who originally submitted the name, Murray Lindsay:

..."Snuffles," the tracking dog of the western cartoon character, Quickdraw McGraw. He didn't appear in every episode, just when Quickdraw needed some tracking done. However, Snuffles was a bit stubborn and not entirely devoted. He would, however, do anything for his beloved doggie biscuits. Snuffles' gyrations upon receiving this treat have stuck in my memory to this day and replay them in my head whenever I lay tastebuds on some tasty morsel.
The story usually reached a sticky moment when Snuffles refused to go further without another biscuit and Quickdraw discovered he was fresh out.

Q: Do you know of any agencies I can contact to get my dog into commercials or movies?

A: No. I just list 'em, i don't book 'em. One of the new features i hope to implement sometime in the distant future is a bulletin board where people could post information & requests for information. If you would like to be notified when this feature gets put in, please consider signing up for our newsletter.

Q: I can't find the dog I'm looking for. Do you know it? Will you just send it to me?

A: If the name is on my list, there's no reason you can't find it yourself; that's why it's all posted here on the web! See the first section, "How do I find a dog by the show it was on, or by its breed?" for tips on how to find text on a web page. If the name is NOT on my list and you would like to submit it, please use the submission form.

Q: I found the dog I was looking for, but the breed isn't mentioned. Do you know the breed?

A: No. If it's not listed, that means i don't know it! The best i could do for you is post an "information request" (click the link for more info on that).

Q: I am looking for a picture of a specific dog or dogs. Will you email one to me?

A: No, but here are some helpful hints: Look through the lists and find the entry on the dog you are interested in. If there's a link from the dog's name, that means you will find more information on and/or a picture of that dog when you click on the link. If there is no link, that means i don't have a picture!

Q: I'm writing a paper for school. Will you send me some information for it?

A: No way! Do your own research! And don't do it on the internet, cuz you're liable to find false information! Get off your duff and go to the library!!!

Q: Do you have general information about dogs, such as their physiology, evolutionary history, etc?

A: No. I have limited knowledge of the names of famous dogs, and that's it!

Q: Would you be interested in a banner exchange, or in advertising our product on your site?

A: I don't do banner exchanges, as i have no banner to exchange. I make no money off my traffic (of which i already have lots, thanks), so i have no need to generate any more.

Q: I don't think you've devoted enough time and energy to an individual dog or a specific breed of which I am particularly fond. I would like to demand that you add more information about that individual/breed.

A: Most of you are thinking, "No way. Nobody would send an email like that." But a few of you might be thinking, "Why not, what's wrong with that?" Anyone who is seriously considering making any "demands" of me at all (and it HAS happened) should direct their energy instead towards finding themselves a clue. I am not your employee, and the internet is not obliged to shape itself to your personal interests. Please contact a physchiatrist immediately, and "demand" that s/he explain the word "megalomaniac."

Q: I think you're an idiot because your list doesn't have the name I thought of. What's the best way to let you know this?

A: Blow it out your ear!

Q: How do I submit a name to your list?

A: I have a nifty submission form all set up to make this process easy for both of us! Please always use this form when making submissions; the reason updates have been so infrequent in the past is that i spend so much time slogging through unclear and/or incomplete submissions!

Q: How do I offer a correction or addition to an existing entry?

A: You can use the submission form to give me additional or corrected information on entries that are already on my list. PLEASE don't send any info you're not sure about! If you think you vaguely remember something differently from a movie you watched 5 years ago, please don't bother writing to me about it.

Q: How do I request additional information on an existing entry?

A: You can use the submission form to request additional information about any name, such as a dog's breed. If the information is not already on the page, chances are i don't have it; so the best i can do is add an "information request" to the dog's entry & hope that someone comes along that has the answer. If you need the info in a hurry, there's a pretty good chance i won't be able to help you.

Q: How do I respond to an information request?

A: Use the submission form, and please keep in mind that, as with making submissions and/or corrections, i am not really interested in vague memories or guesses!

Q: How do I contact misha (The List Keeper) to tell her how much I love her site?

A: Click here! BE FOREWARNED that there is a good chance you may never receive a reply! I'm just one person, and i simply cannot keep up with all the email i get (i finally gave up trying when i realized i was TWO YEARS behind)! Just because you don't hear back from me doesn't mean i don't appreciate hearing from you :)
