How to use the
Evolution Chart

Citizen Lunchbox

Note: this site covers only the Pokémon in Red/Blue/Yellow. ~*~   All of the information here can be found in one form or another in the Nintendo Power Pokémon Player's Guide; i have just rearranged it and presented it in a form that makes it easier to use. I highly recommend that you purchase the guide, not only because i don't want Nintendo to sue me, but because it is absolutely indispensable to anyone who really wants to "catch 'em all."

Here's what the first few lines of the evolution chart look like:

Terms used in the Chart

Top

"STAGE" refers to the Pokémon's stage of evolution; i.e. Bulbasaur to Ivysaur to Venusaur = 3 stages of evolution.

"cat." is short for "catalyst," and i've used this term to describe the event necessary to cause each Pokémon to evolve. Level change is indicated by "L." and the appropriate level; if a stone is required, i have indicated it by its type, i.e. "moon."

"TYPE" refers to the Pokémon's type.

"SAFE FROM" lists the attack types which are ineffective against this Pokémon.

"ATTACKS" refers to the types of attacks the Pokémon can learn, excluding those taught by TM's or HM's. NRM attacks are also excluded, since everyone has them & they're not good for much.

"USE AGAINST:" tells you which Pokémon types are vulnerable each attack. NRM is not included because normal Pokémon are vulnerable to just about everything; so just assume each cell under "USE AGAINST:" contains "NRM."

"tot." is short for "total." The first number indicates how many different types of Pokémon are vulnerable to the various attacks of yours. The number in parentheses indicates the number of "cross-overs;" e.g. if your Pokémon has more than one attack that is effective against the same type of enemy. These "cross-over" attacks are bolded in the "USE AGAINST:" column (Note: the cross-over attacks are not bolded in the Excel version, only the html version).

Printing & using the chart to track your Pokémon

Top

The chart is more or less right-justified so you can punch holes in it & put it in a notebook if you're a big geek like me. :)

The chart is in color, but I have designed it specially so that it will work well on both color and monochrome printers. At least it does on our printers. For best results, please BE SURE BACKGROUND PRINTING IS TURNED ON. Also, you'll probably need to scale down your print size; 75% - 80% works for me, but you'll have to experiment on your own.

Once you've printed out the chart, the best way to use it is to take a highlighter & mark which Pokémon you have, what stage they're in, and which attacks they know. Here's a sample of how the first few lines might look:

When highlighted like this, you can just scan down the list to see which Pokémon you should take into battle with you for the best results.
