JEFFERSON PARK

American Science & Surplus 5316 N. Milwaukee 773.763.0313 last checked: 10/05
This geeky place has lots of science toys, as well as some interesting surplus items that you won't know you needed until you see them. Check out their web site! Hours are listed there.

LAKE VIEW

Chicago Comics 3244 N. Clark 800.509.0333 last checked: 10/05
In addition to comics, toys, stickers, etc., they also have a pretty good selection of unusual books at the back of the store. Last time i checked (summer of 2004, i think), they opened at noon; Monday thru Thursday they close at 8:00, Friday & Saturday at 10:00, and Sundays at 6:00.
Cupid's Treasure 3519 N. Halsted 773.348.3884 last checked: 10/05
An "adult" shop. Open 10 am to midnight weekdays, 10 am to 1 am Fridays & Saturdays.
Egore's Dungeon 900 W. Belmont 773.525.7131 last checked: 10/05
Another store with vinyl clothes, chains, sex toys, etc. I've never found anything really cool or remarkably inexpensive there, but your results may differ. They open at 11 am; Monday through Saturday they close at midnight, Sundays at 10:00.
Evil Clown 3418 N. Halsted 773.509.0708 last checked: 10/05
I haven't been there in ages, but if you're going to 99th Floor (see wearables for more info), you might as well stop by. They used to have all sorts of underground-type stuff. Monday through Saturday they're open from noon to 9:00, Sunday from noon 'til 7.
Hi Fi 3728 N. Clark 773.388.3838 last checked: 10/05
I don't know what the deal is with these people. Their phone has been disconnected, apparently very recently. Next time i'm down there i'll check it out.
J1Toy 3326 N. Clark St. 773.248.0644 last checked: 10/05
All Japanese import toys, all the time. Excellent selection. Go here and spend money so they don't go out of bidness, 'kay?
Pleasure Chest 3155 N. Broadway 773.525.7151 last checked: 10/05
An "adult" shop. Open 10 am to midnight 7 days week.
Reckless Records 3157 N. Broadway 773.404.5080 last checked: 10/05
Last time i was there, they had lots of great punk vinyl. They're still there, but i dunno how their punk selection is these days.
Strange Cargo 3448 N. Clark ??? last checked: 10/05
They've got some vintage (used) clothing, as well as a lot of new stuff, like toys & novelties. I got an excellent set of salt & pepper shakers shaped like monkeys wearing fezzes. 'Nuff said.
Taboo-Tabou 854 W. Belmont 773SAFESEX x223 last checked: 10/05
They have lots of plastic clothing plus goth acoutrements, and sex toys galore. They also advertise a Gallery of Condoms, but i've never actually seen it. They've moved back to their old spot, and last time i was there (summer of 2004), the $10 rack had become the "$2.50 - $15" rack (even though i haven't checked in on the discount rack in a while, i know the store is still there).
Uncle Fun 1338 W. Belmont 773.477.8223 last checked: 10/05
They have all kinds of kooky stuff, from retro metal lunchboxes to drawers full of rubber bugs.

LINCOLN PARK

Tower Records 2301 N. Clark 773.477.5994 last checked: 10/05
If you've never heard of Tower, check out their web site, dammit!

RAVENSWOOD

Quake Collectibles 4628 N. Lincoln 773.878.4288 last checked: 10/05
Open Mon, Wed, Thu, Fri 1-6; Sat 12-6; Sun 12-5; closed Tuesday. I've never had time to stop in here, but they always have such interesting retro toys & stuff in the window.

RIVER NORTH

Sanrio Store 520 N. Michigan 312.644.9783 last checked: 10/05
Just like every other Sanrio store, except that you have to endure the hideous "Miracle Mile" to get there. There's a Toscano Design somewhere around there too if you like overpriced gargoyles.

WICKER PARK

Quimby's Book Store 1854 W. North Ave. 773.342.0910 last checked: 10/05
If you like to read & Borders is too tame for you, stop by Quimby's. They've got all kinds of subversive, underground, and off-the-wall material; very popular with the local population of anarchists. And you can sell your own 'zines there. Neato!
Reckless Records 1532 N. Milwaukee 773.235.3727 last checked: 10/05
Last time i was there, they had lots of great punk vinyl. They're still there, but i dunno how their punk selection is these days.
Rotofugi 1953 W. Chicago Ave. 312.491.9501 last checked: 10/05
Rotofugi is an upscale designer toy store and gallery. They sell both American- and Japanese-designed urban vinyl, capsule toys, t-shirts, etc.. They also have toy-oriented gallery shows occasionally; i saw one that had photos of Transformers as religious icons.
